Meet Veronica & friends

Every spring and summer we receive calls about ducks and geese who
were given to children as Easter gifts. It is amazing to us that people still engage in such ignorant
and irresponsible behavior.
Sure enough, as soon as those fuzzy little ducklings grow up and
require a constant source of clean water to swim and bathe in, as well
as food, roaming space, and predator proof shelter, the novelty
“gift” has become more than inconvenient.
Veronica and her brothers, Vinnie, Sydney, and Elvis, were just such
an example. We agreed to
take on the life-long responsibility of caring for the fab four on the
condition that those people NEVER purchase an animal of any kind for the
purpose of gift giving. We
explained how important it is to adopt rather than buy animals and that
people must be prepared to meet all of the animal’s species specific
needs for his or her natural lifespan.
Fortunately Veronica’s former family agreed and will not repeat
their mistakes.
For the past 4 years Veronica, Vinnie, Sydney, and Elvis have been
living their lives in peace. They
have several kiddie pools to choose from and a nice big pond to splash
around in. They feast on scratch grains and greens as they wonder about.
Every night they go to bed on soft straw, in a safe warm barn.
Veronica and her brothers are just 4 of 20 ducks, 3 geese, and a swan
who also share the pond and pools of Peaceful
Prairie Sanctuary.
