Everyone seems to be talking about the Atkins diet, a
weight-loss scheme that says you can eat lots of meat.
The Atkins empire pulls in $100 million every year, putting
people at risk for permanent physical damage to their health.
Thankfully, we have George Eisman.

What’s wrong with the Atkins diet?
In June, George Eisman -- one of the nation's foremost educators
on vegetarian nutrition -- will talk about the Atkins diet and about
vegetarian / vegan nutrition to VSC members in Denver, Fort Collins, and
Colorado Springs. All of
these events are free and open to the public.
The so-called “low carbohydrate diets” such as Atkins are clearly
a slap at vegetarianism, since it is plant foods which are high in
carbohydrates, and animal foods have low or no carbohydrates.
Atkins diets seem to be everywhere.
There are now entire magazines devoted to “low-carb” living
which you can find in natural foods stores, and I’ve heard Atkins
often discussed in casual conversations with nonvegetarians.
A full-page ad on the back of the latest AARP magazine says,
“Wake up to Atkins.”
George Eisman is well qualified to speak on this problem.
He has served as a faculty member in Dietetics and Nutrition at
several universities and colleges and created the first accredited
program in Vegetarian Studies. He has worked in a children's hospital, a
nursing home and for public health agencies in four states. Eisman has
spoken at numerous events and conferences and is the author of two
books, The Most Noble Diet (1994) and A Basic Course in
Vegetarian and Vegan Nutrition (2003).
Here’s George Eisman’s speaking schedule:
Friday, June 4th, in Colorado Springs.
George Eisman will present his talk “What’s Wrong with
Atkins?” at 7:00 p. m. in the small hall of All Souls Unitarian
Church, 730 N. Tejon. We'll
plan to have a potluck before the program and will post details on the
VSC website as we draw closer to the date.
