Dr. Michael Greger to speak in Colorado

We're flying Dr. Michael Greger out to Colorado's Front Range from Boston for an extended Weekend jam-packed with a variety of his famous talks.

(Note: the VSC newsletter incorrectly reports on page 8 that Dr. Greger is giving talks on April 15.  This is incorrect, it should be March 15.)

Here's his schedule:

Saturday, March 15:

2:00 pm -- 5:00 pm in Northwest Denver:

"Going Vegetarian! A How-to Guide for Making the Change."  Talk at the Highlands United Methodist Church, located on the corner of 32nd and Osceola in Denver.

You've decided that the "whys" of vegetarianism make sense, and now you need the "hows." Dr. Greger gives an entertaining talk packed with practical advice on how to go vegetarian or vegan, from meal planning to nutrition to the personal and social aspects of making the transition.  Humorist and author, Mark Reinhardt, will grab the audience with an opening presentation.

7:00 pm -- 9:00 pm at Denver University in southeast Denver:

"The Effect of Food Choices on the Environment," a memorable and lively look at the devastating effects of the livestock industry on the environment.  This will be at the DU Driscoll Center North, Room #1884 in Denver.  Complete with outrageous props, this humorous presentation incorporates theatrical elements to illustrate the effect of food choices on the environment.

Sunday, March 16:

12 noon -- 4:00pm, in Boulder:

Cooking demo and talk: "Mad Cow Disease: Plague of the 21st Century?"  Located at the Boulder Depot, in Boulder, in the Parking Lot in front of Vitamin Cottage and Whole Foods at the Corner of 30th and Pearl.  Stephanie Gierlach will open with the cooking presentation. Dr. Greger will present discussing the health implications of Mad Cow Disease and its human form, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, and the role of modern animal agribusiness in the coming crisis. The number of cases of this frightening and mysterious disease continues to increase rapidly with no end in sight. Meanwhile, the American beef industry continues to be complacent, protecting business interests over those of the consumer. He will also present "Deadly Game: Mad Deer Disease in the United States," a riveting update on the mad cow disease crisis, focusing on the threat of Chronic Wasting Disease in North America. Thought to have originated at a wildlife research facility in Colorado, this so-called "mad deer disease" has now spread throughout North America with the help of the game farming and hunting industries. This fatal prion disease seems unique in its ability to be spread by casual contact between animals, threatening American wildlife and the public.

5:00 pm -- 7:00 pm, in Boulder:

"Optimum Vegetarian Nutrition: Surprising New Research on Omega 3's and B12." Nutrition Talk at the Boulder Co-op, located at 1904 Pearl Street in Boulder. Dr. Greger returns from the latest International Congress on Vegetarian Nutrition with cutting edge information on vegan and vegetarian nutrition. He will review the newest research -- highlighting the mounting importance of Omega 3 fatty acids and Vitamin B12 in the diet -- and share his recommendations for maximizing vegetarian health and longevity.

Monday, March 17:

6:00 pm -- 9:00 pm, in Boulder:

"Corporate Globalization: Trading Away Our Right to Protect Animals."  At the CU Boulder Campus Humanities Room 150.  After an opening presentation by Dr. Marc Bekoff, Dr. Greger will present his analysis of corporate globalization, as he shares his research about how global trade agreements and institutions such as GATT, NAFTA, and the World Trade Organization (WTO) have affected animals. He will offer his understanding of what impact the proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas (the expansion of NAFTA) will have on animals as well. This is a riveting and thought-provoking talk, infused with vast historical background and even humor, about what may be the greatest threat ever posed to animal protection.
