Continue the Print Newsletter?
Convert to an E-mail only newsletter?
The VSC is now debating whether to continue, or discontinue, the
print version of this newsletter! Here
are some of the things being discussed.
E-mail newsletter only:
1. Young people don't get their information from printed matter any
more. They get it through
e-mail or the internet. All
organizations will eventually operate with e-mail only newsletters
eventually anyway.
2. By having an e-mail newsletter only, we would save money on the
printing and postage, which is a major expense for the VSC.
3. An e-mail only newsletter saves trees by eliminating the need for
paper. Most newsletter
articles are already posted on the VSC's web site, so this would not be
a big change in our way of operating.
Keep print newsletter:
1. The September / October newsletter cost about $300 to print
and mail for 450 newsletters. If
we pay the newsletter editor $150, we still make a profit of $11 on each
$20 membership we get. The
VSC is doing well financially.
2. Many of our members will quit if they don't get a print
newsletter. Only about 1/3 of our members have given us an e-mail
address. We can have both a
print newsletter and an e-mail newsletter for people who don't want a
print newsletter.
3. The biggest local vegetarian groups all have a print newsletter.
The Vegetarian Society of Hawaii, the Vegetarian Society of
Toronto, and the Vegetarian Society of D. C., all with about 1000 (or
more!) members, have regular printed newsletters.
