Sometimes in life you make a mistake and it turns out to be lined with gold. This is what happened when I set out with a friend to meet another friend at a Mexican restaurant on South Golden Road that had been recommended by a member of VSC. Talking more than driving, I pulled into a restaurant with a sign out front saying Mexican Kitchen.
That must be it, I thought. We went in and sat down and ordered drinks (soft ones, there's no liquor license here) and waited. Friend #2 didn't come. My cell phone rang. It was Ann. She had gone up the road to the "right" restaurant while we had pulled in to a different one. Soon she joined us and we laughed at my mistake as we ordered.
I had the
"Caramba" (a burrito filled with rice, beans and potatoes) topped with salsa (vegetarian and very good). The red and green chili are not vegetarian. For $3.50 I got a very healthy serving. I also had a side of Guacamole (vegetarian and very good) with chips prepared in vegetable oil ($4.00). Selma had the #2 Combination Plate, including a burrito, a tostada and a tamale (the tamale not vegetarian) for $5.25. Ann had the #1 Combination Plate, including a burrito, a taco and a tostada, all vegetarian, for $5.25.
Ovo-lacto vegetarians will enjoy the Flan ($2.50) for dessert. All these delicious things come from old family recipes and the restaurant is family run. It's been there for ten years and you get the feeling that it will be there for a long time to come.
We enjoyed talking with Carla, Albert and George who work as a team to keep serving this popular fare to local residents, including employees from nearby businesses. In addition to cooking, George makes replicas of Native American artifacts, many of which are displayed on the wall. Where else can you sit underneath tomahawks and eat burritos?
To remind you that you really are in a Mexican restaurant there are Mexican hats lining the wall opposite the Indian pieces. We thought of ordering
sopapillas, but Carla told us they are fried in the same oil as non-vegetarian items. We were disappointed, but glad that she was so honest. One other drawback for many vegetarians is that the restaurant does allow smoking.
There is only one small room, so people bothered by smoke be forewarned. There are fans rotating on the ceiling and, although there was someone smoking while we were there, I was not bothered by it. That's saying a lot since I am very sensitive to smoke. When you go, be sure you spend some time talking to these folks. Keep in mind that they are closed on Sundays and also on three-day holidays. "The only time we get time off", said Carla.
Thanks Carla, Albert and George! And thanks to Lady Luck for steering my car to your colorful, cozy restaurant for some good, old-fashioned Mexican food.
Enjoy -- Milly Jones
